MUMBAI: A video went viral on social media X (formerly Twitter) showing patchwork on the Mumbai coastal road’s northbound stretch near Haji Ali on the bridge towards Worli.
The post by the handle @drifteternal read, “This is beyond disappointing. Mumbai’s Rs 14000 crore Coastal Road already looks like patchwork. I feel betrayed—this was supposed to be world-class infrastructure. L&T and BMC must be held accountable. Is this what we paid for?”
The post got reposted over a 1,000 times and had close to four lakh views.
The stretch of the road which was constructed by Larsen & Turbo was opened to motorists on July 10 last year.
BMC officials confirming the patches on the road said, “It is a bitumen concrete road which was laid during the monsoons. However a few days ago it was realised that the joints in between the laying of road that was done have opened up. Therefore now asphalting was done.”
The Mumbai coastal road since March 2024 has only been opened up in phases and till date awaits its full commissioning.
For the record: First on March 11, 2024 the south bound roadwas opened from Worli to Marine Drive, then on June 10 the northbound carriageway was opened up but only upto Haji Ali. The third opening was off the road from Haji Ali to Worli on July 11 . On September 12, the northbound connector from the coastal road to the sea link was inaugurated and opened to traffic from September 13.
The north bound arm of the bridge connecting coastal road to the sea link is opened on January 26, 2025.
