Heart diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. These are often called the silent killers because they can develop unnoticed for years before showing symptoms. Many people do not realize they have a problem until they experience a heart attack, stroke, or other life-threatening complications. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, and smoking are key risk factors, yet they often go undiagnosed or unmanaged.
The danger lies in the gradual buildup of plaque in arteries, leading to reduced blood flow to the heart. This can cause chest pain, shortness of breath, or even sudden cardiac arrest. Sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and chronic stress further increase the risk. Unfortunately, because early symptoms are mild or absent, people may ignore warning signs until it’s too late. And this is why raising awareness is important.
Awareness educates people on risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, poor diet, and lack of exercise. It helps dispel myths and misinformation about heart diseases. Many believe heart problems only affect older people, but even young adults can be at risk.
TOI is organising an awareness program on heart health to instill heart-healthy habits in people of all ages. The event, a webinar will be on March 5 and will have several experts in attendance.
