Popular playback singer Kalpana Raghavendar, who was found unconscious at her Hyderabad residence on Wednesday, has denied attempting suicide.
According to On Manorama, currently under hospital care, Kalpana clarified that she accidentally overdosed on insomnia tablets due to stress caused by differences with her daughter over her education.
According to KPHB police, Kalpana and her husband have been living in Nizampet for the past five years. The singer told the police that on March 3, she had an argument with her daughter, Daya Prasad, regarding her education. While Kalpana wanted her daughter to study in Hyderabad, she refused. Kalpana had returned from Ernakulam on March 4 and struggled to sleep despite multiple attempts.
“I took eight tablets but was still unable to sleep. I took another 10 tablets and lost consciousness. I don’t know what happened after that,” Kalpana told the police.
Her husband, Prasad, grew concerned after she failed to answer his phone calls and alerted colony welfare members. They, in turn, informed the police, who broke open the door and found her unconscious in her bedroom. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she regained consciousness and assured authorities that no one else was involved.
Talking to the media, Kalpana’s daughter, Daya Prasad, also dismissed rumors of a suicide attempt, stating,”Please don’t misinterpret anything. Our family is doing well, and my mom will be back in a few days.”
Kalpana, who began her singing career at the age of five, has recorded over 1,500 songs in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil. Fans are now wishing her a speedy recovery.
Kalpana is the daughter of the popular singers TS Raghavendra and Sulochana and she has also worked with the legends such as AR Rahman, MS Viswanathan, SP Balasubrahmanyam and many others. Kalpana Raghavendar trained in Carnatic music under Madurai T. Srinivasan. She holds a Master of Computer Applications (MCA) degree and is currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil).
