Kumbakonam women councillors protest denial of entry to their spouses at meeting

Several women councillors of Kumbakonam Corporation on Thursday protested against the denial of entry to their spouses into the Meeting Hall.

Spouses and men related to the 19 women councillors, who used to accompany them to the civic body headquarters during the Council meeting days, were denied entry into the hall on the old Corporation office premises where an urgent meeting was held on Thursday.

While the Council meeting was about to commence, the women councillors, a majority of them belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Mayor K. Saravanan, received phone calls from their relatives who asked them to come out of the hall since they were not allowed entry.

The women councillors joined their spouses or kin waiting in the corridor of the hall and registered their protest with Commissioner K. Balu and sought an explanation from him why men were denied entry into the hall.

On hearing about the protest, Deputy Mayor S.P. Thamizhazhagan came to the spot and convinced the protesting women councillors by announcing that their relatives would be accommodated in his chamber till the conclusion of the urgent meeting.
