PANAJI: Goa became the first state in the country to issue a QR code to tourists travelling with vehicles in the coastal paradise. Once their vehicle documents are checked, a QR code is generated, and it is valid for 12 hours. Tourists can show the QR code to traffic personnel if they are stopped again for checks of vehicle documents.
Once the QR code is scanned, police personnel will know that the tourist possesses all the relevant documents, and the tourist will be allowed to proceed without further checks. So far, Goa police have issued 4,000 QR codes to tourists to help them avoid harassment during their holidays.
“Goa police have introduced the Quick Pass mobile application for traffic officials, designed to streamline traffic compliance and reduce inconvenience for motorists,” crime branch SP Rahul Gupta told TOI. “This innovative app generates a QR code sent as an SMS to rule-abiding commuters. It is valid for 12 hours.”
Gupta added, “If the rider is stopped again for routine checks, he can show this QR code. With this initiative, document verification becomes hassle-free, ensuring smoother movement of vehicles while maintaining compliance with traffic regulations.”
The app also features real-time traffic data analysis, geotagging, and hotspot mapping of traffic checks, helping senior officials strategise.
“This is the first such app to be developed by any state in the country. It will help improve the tourist experience in Goa,” Gupta said.
The app was developed by students of Padre Conceicao College of Engineering in Goa during a hackathon organised by Goa police in 2024.
